Hey guys,

I have a 280zxt81 and I was woundering what can I do to get some real torque out of this Automatic? Other than to convert to stick. I need to really get off the line faster. What would be the best resolution?

oh yeah,
The car has 3 inch exhaust straight through, MSD, 8" intake, Sebring Exhaust muffler straight through. Maybe a cam? a mechanic told me that automatics can't have cams in them (lame) and that they are limited. What your take?

Well I just responded to your later post...the one where you said you had a "standard automatic"....now I see that you do have an auto. I have never heard that BS that an auto can't benefit from a milder cam. A bigger cam will raise your power on the high end but you will actually lose some torque. The car will seem much faster though. The best way to get the torque you are looking for is to do an over bore on the block.

Improve your hole-shot...Change the converter!

Put in a higher stall torque-converter. Believe it or not, the automatic trans on your turbo-Z is more-or-less the exact same transmission that came on the first automatic-equiped 240-Zcars. So the torque converter DOES do a bolt-in swap with the converter out of a Nissan truck or any "NAPS-Z" engine-equiped automatic trans....Maybe even more will fit! Using one of these 4-cylinder converters will raise both the stall speed and flash-speed of your trans somewhere around 200 to 300 rpm. That's quite a bit! Talk to some import-transmission experts in your area to confirm. Just think....A massively improved hole-shot without doing anything to the motor......ase mat

I agree that a torque converter would really help out your off the line as would some better gears like the 4.11's. As for the cam it really helps and you can do it on an automatic. As far as the myth of losing power on the low rpms thats not true. If you were to just slap a cam on the car and thats it then yes but if you tune the car for the cam you will actually pick up power through out the whole rpm range which includes down low where you need it. With the mild cam and tunning I did on my 280z my torque shoots up to almost max torque at 2000 rpm. Although mine is a 5-speed I'm sure that if I had an automatic it would shoot off the line with the torque I have. So this is something to think about.

A high stall torque converter is a good idea.

Also you should advance the cam timing to the 3rd hole and turn the ignition timing up a few degrees.

You should also make sure that your injectors are functioning properly. Remove them and have them serviced.

Changing to a gear lower than a 3.54 will kill what highway driving ability that you have left.

If you add it all up it would be cheaper to change over to a manual trans. Search the post and you will find that most people really enjoyed the switch.

Good luck

Re: Torque Converter cause heating problems?

Thanks guys it sounds like the Torque Converter may have won this dispute. I heard that a higher stall torque converter may cause the z car to over heat. T/F
