Exhaust Size?

I have a standard 280ZX and I dont plan on making any engine mods. I've heard a 2 1/2 inch exhaust with two mufflers is the way to go with the 2.8 litre EFI engine but my local exhaust shop believes this is too big for an engine under 3 litre. They recommend 2 1/4 inch system, but what do you guys think. I like the 2 1/2 inch system but I dont want to loose power in a car thats already 22 years old.

The stock exhaust manifold looks fairly effective so is it worth paying the money for a set of headers (extractors). When you installed a set of headers can you keep the standard heat shield, as I dont want to remove mine. The exhaust and inlet manifold gasket is all one piece, therefore if I decided to install some headers do I need to pull the inlet manifold off to replace the gasket or is it normally ok, to just bolt the new headers on using the old gasket. With other cars I have owned I have always replaced this gasket. Any help would be great.

Justin,I agree with your local exhaust shop, imop a 2 1/2 inch on any engine under 3.0 will give a little more top end but lose on bottom end. On bigger engines a person can get away with a larger exhaust pipe. Of course after the muffler any thing goes.

I read on this forum of people installing 3 inch exhaust on stock Z engines . Of course this is America, bigger is better. ( lol ) Not being critical, as I fall into this myself.

It made a world of difference on my 78Z when hearers were installed. The heat shield has not been changed. Replace the gasket. Good luck to you. cec1936

Don't think headers by 'emselves gonna buy you a whole lot. But combined w/ performance cam, now you're talking! (See dyno test results at Zhome.com.)

Heat shielding is a serious concern. Header tape wrap said to get messy and promote header corrosion. Ceramic 'Jet-Coat' supposed to provide heat shielding and protect against corrosion.

Justin, Ive got a 79 280zx stock motor, stock headers, 2 1/4 inch system with straight thru muffler, it drones a bit at about 2000 rpm but fine everywhere else. Not a lot of noticable difference in power though!
