Adjusting valve clearance...

I am getting ready to adust the valve clearance on my '76.
Just waiting for the engine to cool down the rest of the way.

Mainly because I can hear the valve train noise. Seems louder than it should be.

This is my first Z. Had if for over a year now. Wondering if excessive valve train noise is normal on these cars, or is it really quiet when adjusted correctly?

Anybody have any experience on this or any pointers that might make it easier?

I do have the original Nissan repair manual, so I don't need specs.

Do you have carbs. or F.I.? Noisy injectors can sound like loose valves.
Why are you waiting? The valves need to be hot to be adjusted. Great for building character - and callouses.

The cool settings are to approximate the adjustment when you are firing up a motor for the first time or have just replaced the head, etc. They get you into the ballpark.

You need to adjust the valve lash hot. It really isn't too bad, just having everything ready in the garage to pull off the valve cover after taking the car for a bit of a run.

Well, I have 8 of the valves adjusted now. (cool setting) According to the book, the clearances are .05mm more when the engine is hot(isn't that backwards?), plus I really don't feel like burning myself.

And besides, the book says to adjust them cold first, and then hot.. (I am trying to avoid the hot part if at all possible.) :)

I do have the clearances .003mm more than the book calls for cold, so it should be fine I would think. (that was the closest feeler guage I had).

The ones I have adjusted so far were really loose. Almost double of what the book calls for.

Thought it was time to take a rest cause my back was starting to hurt from bending over the car for so long...

I'll let you guys know how it turns out once I fire it up again and go for a spin. :)

Re: thermal expansion

Well, I will have to do it later then. I need to go to bed tonight. And tommorow I am hopefully taking to my cousin's so he can straighten the frame.
It runs fine as it is now. (cold adjustment).

It is super quiet now. I can actually hear the injectors clicking instead of just the valvetrain.

I thought it had mad power before.... Well, now it has even more... I'm thinking under 5 second 0-60 times easy. I don't even want to know how long I can burn rubber for now.. :)

I think it will get even better gas mileage than before. In 5th at around 50-55Mph, I barley have to give it any gas. (foot barely on the pedal... really hard to keep at the speed limit now).. Was getting 27Mpg before..

I did have to re-adjust the idle and the AFM in order to get it to idle really smooth.

And now when I take the oil cap off when the car is running, the engine slows way down like it is supposed to instead of nothing happening.

I do have one question though.. Why does the book specify that the clearances increase when the engine warms up. It seems backwards to me. Unless of course the valves themselves or the valve seats expand causing the valve stems to not come up as high into the head...

Re: thermal expansion

Thermal expansion coefficient between aluminium / steel
causes the the head casting to expand more then the vlv. between the rocker pivot stud and valve seat area causing your lash to
increase. the head grows the vlv. does't ,well as much

You really should reset lash to the recommended hot settings at
a not too later date. Its great that you got in there to adjust
them. now you know what to expect doing it hot is a walk in the
park. You can do and with good results.

Re: thermal expansion

Well, it is at my cousin's now for the frame to be straitened. I won't have it back till late next week. And then I have to leave for college in Florida. I guess I will have to do it there when I get a chance (like on Saturday or something)..
